Eileen M. Eagan, Associate Professor of History, University of Southern Maine

Proposal Type: Panel

Seeking: Additional Presenters

Abstract: Digital technology allows us to broaden audiences and perspectives. At the same time, it can encourage participation in shaping the history and memory of cities in particular. What projects and potential projects can be linked to break down barriers and offer new views of the past? The existing Portland (Maine)Women’s History trail is now an app Http://pmwht.org/ that is one example of new approaches. This could be linked to other projects in other cities in the US and other countries.

Seeking: My goal for this panel is to bring together people who have been working on digital project is clearly on s on cities, on trails in particular, but not exclusively, with others who would be interested in creating new projects. The focus of the Portland Maine Women’s History trail application (Http://pmwht.org/) is women’s history so individuals with interest and experience with women and gender would be welcome but so would individuals or members of groups interested in other parts of city) those interested in changing or developing further ways of looking at how walking trails and tours of cities reflect and shape historical perspectives.

Another goal would be to link existing projects and encourage new ones. Individuals with experience in such projects and those with interest in specific projects are welcome.

I’m sorry my description is a little garbled. I hope my goal is clear. I’ll be glad to clarify.

Hi there: This is a great idea! I hope you will reach out to Eli Pousson at Baltimore Heritage –he has been using curatescape to build preservation-oriented public history walking tours in the city.

    Hi Eileen!

I do a Curatescape-powered mobile history app here in Spokane–SpokaneHistorical.org–and would be happy to help if I can. I have already presented about my project at the NCPH (Ottawa) but could serve as chair or commentor if you like. On the other hand I am tenured and don’t need another CV line, so if you have other folks lined up that is fine as well.
