Abstract

Public libraries are increasingly providing their communities with public programs and engaging in community projects and partnerships. This panel would be a discussion among public historians working in libraries (public or not) who work on public programming, projects with community partners (like oral history projects), assist in collections development, and/or bring their public historian training to bear in diverse ways in a library setting.

Seeking

My goal in submitting this proposal is to find other public historians working in library settings (public, university, or otherwise) who would like to discuss the work they do. Public historians in libraries seem like a natural fit to enhance library programs, outreach, and community involvement. I am curious about other public historians who work in libraries since MLIS degrees are more common for library work. I am specifically looking for more panelists to participate in a discussion about humanities programs and projects going on in libraries. I would also welcome a discussion of how to refine or improve the topic. I am also open to a session format other than the traditional panel discussion.

I am very interested in discussing this and/or participating in the panel. I work in the Special Collections Division at Chicago Public Library. I have an MA in Public History and an MSLS and have worked in archives within libraries my entire career.

I would be interested in attending or discussing this subject. I work at the National Library of Medicine in the History of Medicine Exhibition Program division (relatively new there) and have a Master’s in Public History. I definitely use public history lens on a daily basis.
