Primary Purpose of Position:

The Tryon Palace Education Branch Head is responsible for research, development, implementation, and evaluation of costumed first- and third-person interpretive programs and tours for visitors to our site. This position is also responsible for program offerings at the North Carolina History Center. This position must ensure that the public receives an accurate and engaging interpretation of the history of the site, region and state in line with Tryon Palace’s mission.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Research, design, implement, and evaluate educational programs, tours, workshops, and outreach initiatives at Tryon Palace and the North Carolina History Center
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Education staff, docents, and volunteers to ensure high-quality program delivery.
  • Develop and manage Education Branch annual budget
  • Collaborate with teachers to create age-appropriate, curriculum-aligned experiences that enhance classroom learning
  • Represent Tryon Palace at conferences, workshops, and professional networks.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work Monday – Friday, 8AM – 5PM with weekend and holiday work as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
  • Considerable knowledge of early U.S. history.
  • Demonstrated experience developing education and interpretive plans to meet the needs of various audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and/or supervising others.
  • Demonstrated experience with public speaking and presentation skills.

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience meeting curriculum requirements of K – 12 through educational and interpretive programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the site’s history, including its cultural, social, and political significance.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution AND four years of museum or related work, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
