Program Introduction

Since its inception in 2012, the MA program's Public History track has graduated about 15 students, on average 1-3 per year. Our strengths include the breadth of our faculty in both US and world history; the rich local history of reformism in Rochester (which provides ample material for some of our core courses); and opportunities for course work with the Museum Studies program in our Anthropology Department and collections management in the Visual Studies Workshop affiliated with The College at Brockport. Our entire program is available online, mainly as synchronous sections attached to classes on campus, but with some select courses offered asynchronously, as well.

In addition to the usual menu of state- and federally-sponsored financial aid sources, two competitive, merit-based TA and GA positions are awarded in our MA program each semester, as well as the Flieger Family Fellowship, which usually goes to an outstanding first- or second-semester student.

Internship Requirements

Two internships are required for the program, 3 credit hours each. They may be done as stand-alone projects or in tandem with classroom seminars that highlight reading and discussion of the internship experience.

We have ongoing relationships with a number of local institutions, including museums, local historians' offices, and archives. Students generally approach these internship sites themselves, with the help and advice of faculty, but the Graduate Director is also available to facilitate introductions, as needed.

Program Introduction

Established in 2013, the Interdisciplinary minor in Museum Studies and Public History at the College of Brockport allows any interested students to gain knowledge and skills in these fields. The minor requires two core courses in Museum Studies, Public History, Collections Management and Exhibition management, two internships and 2 electives in a wide variety of disciplines, including History, Anthropology, Art History, Communication and Journalism. The program has graduated 7 students per year on average. The College of Brockport has links to the Rochester City Historians office, the Strong Museum, the Susan B. Anthony House, as well as other sites for internships. The College also offers a MA in Public History.
