Established in 2026, the 33-credit hour Museum Studies MA program offers advanced study in museum methods and practices. This in-person graduate degree program works closely with collections on campus, providing students with opportunities for hands-on experiences. UGA also offers 16-credit hours undergraduate and graduate certificates in Museum Studies.

Internship Requirements

Students are required to complete an internship (MUSE 7015) as part of the graduate program.

In order to receive academic credit for the internship students must work at least 105 hours. Internships may be paid or unpaid.

Students are expected to find appropriate internships under the guidance of the program director. Internships may be on or off campus. Virtual internship are also possible. Some on-campus internship options include: the Georgia Museum of Art, the Georgia Museum of Natural History; and the Special Collections Library.

Program Introduction

This intensive Maymester Program introduces students to the field of museum studies through lectures and site visits to collections in Washington, DC. Students will enroll in two 3-credit courses: HIST 4026/6026 Public History in Washington, DC and TXMI 5710/7710 TXMI Study Away Introduction to Design History and Museums in Washington, DC. Both courses count as electives for the museum studies certificate program but are open to all students.

Students will attend lectures, meet with professionals in the field, and study museum collections both during guided site visits and on their own.
