Proposal Type: Workshop

Abstract: There is a recognized need in the public history field for assistance in finding grant money and providing guidance in grant writing and constructing successful grant proposals. I wish to present a workshop on how-to seek funding opportunities and secure grants.

Seeking: I am proposing to do a half-day workshop based on my grant-writing guidebook, Taking Public History for Granted: A Grant-Writing Guide for Public Historians. This guide is designed to serve professionals in the field of public history in identifying and securing grant funding. It is based in part on my experience working as a Sponsored Research Officer at California State University, Sacramento.

An outline of what the workshop would cover includes the following:

(1)   Review of funding opportunities geared towards a variety of public history projects

(2)   Step-by-step processes to help develop the individual pieces of a grant proposal

(3)   Provide helpful online resources

(4)   Review sample budgets, narratives and other examples of components of successful proposals.

This workshop would be useful to both beginning grant writers and successful grant writers. The goal of this workshop would be to provide knowledge and a resource that would ease writers into the world of grant writing.

If someone wanted to present a combined workshop with me I am certainly open to that. Particularly at this early point I am hoping to learn if there is an interest for a grant-writing workshop at the 2015 Annual Meeting – one that would target the many facets and areas within Public History. This workshop could be beneficial to educators, directors of non-profit organizations, museum directors, preservationists, archæologists, librarians, historians, archivists, artists, and even current students preparing mock grant proposals for an assignment.

This is a great idea that will, I think, attract an even bigger audience if you pitch it as an opportunity for specialized training for graduate students in public history.

I agree this is a great idea for a workshop with broad appeal. It might help to specifically include a hands-on grant-writing exercise if possible. Perhaps registrants could be invited to bring a grant they are already exploring or a project/thing for which they’d like to find funding.

Thank you both for your feedback…it is greatly appreciated. I have tried to incorporate your suggestions as best as possible into my final proposal.

Graduate students are certainly one of the target audiences for this type of workshop although I would also like to keep it open to others who are new to the grant-writing field as well.

I have also included language in my proposal to encourage participants to have a project in mind for which they are seeking funding…and we certainly will be doing some hands-on exercises.

    Thank you both again!
