Take Action to Stop NARA Closures
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is planning to close its regional archives in San Francisco and Chicago, putting public access to important regional historical records at risk. These facilities hold collections that document the histories of communities, organizations, and individuals across the country, including materials that may not be available elsewhere.
Access to the Chicago facility will begin to be restricted as early as October 13, 2026, raising immediate concerns for researchers, educators, historians, and members of the public who rely on these collections. The proposed closures also leave important questions about the long-term location and accessibility of the permanent records currently housed at both facilities.
The NCPH Advocacy Committee urges members to take action to protect these regional archives. Contact your representatives, express your opposition to the closures, and encourage colleagues and professional networks to do the same. Your voice can help demonstrate the importance of preserving public access to these collections and maintaining a national network of archives that serves communities across the country.
