Internship Requirements

The internship module is an unpaid part of regular coursework that takes place in the Spring semester in Year 1 (full-time and part-time). The module accounts for 9 ECTS.

Organisation of internships/placements for this module begins in the Autumn preceding the module commencement in Spring. Students work with the module coordinator to organise their own placement or practice; the coordinator will also be able to advise of availability with local providers with whom the programme works annually. The module coordinator can assist students in drafting first contact correspondence and agreeing a work programme with potential placement providers. The student should be flexible enough to meet the host’s expectations while being facilitated to advance their own learning goals as far as practicable.

Please note that this module may be taken by practicing public historians (or those who work who already work in public history or a relevant cognate area) as a work-based reflective practice. The same coursework and assessment applies to both the practice and the internship. Suggestions for how to do this can be discussed with the module coordinator. A mentor (or peer observer who can evaluate your practice) should be identified; their feedback will form part of the assessment.

The placement/practice will be for a total of between 20 and 24 days. This usually means 2 days [c.15 hours] a week over the course of the 10–12 weeks of the Spring academic semester.
