Lost Louisville maps photographs from the University of Louisville Archives and Special Collections depicting buildings that once stood in Louisville, Kentucky.
By making this material available in map format we hope to increase community engagement with our collections, and spur conversation on why these buildings are gone and how their absence affects the city of Louisville.

Gathering the images for the Lost Louisville project began with the Digital Collections. The University of Louisville Digital Collections project began in 2009 and archivists have scanned thousands of images of Louisville and provided descriptions with identifiers down to the street level when possible. That furnished an exceptionally rich set of resources to start the Lost Louisville project. The other major resource for this project was time. I recruited another librarian and a detail-oriented student assistant to help with the research. I created a spreadsheet and provided training on how to identify lost buildings and record the necessary location and description data. Creating the metadata took about a year and a half.
