Bio

Steph McDougal earned her PhD in public history from Middle Tennessee State University in 2023; her major research area is the history of the Jim Crow South. She also holds a master of science in historic preservation from the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture and a master of technical and scientific communication from Miami University (Ohio). Steph’s career began in sales and marketing (a great background for grantwriting and business development), then pivoted to training/education, where she established her first consulting practice. After relocating to Texas in 2005 and earning her MSHP, Steph refocused her consulting business to historic preservation. McDoux Preservation has won numerous awards for preservation planning, design guidelines, community outreach, etc. from the American Planning Association (national and state chapters) as well as state and local preservation organizations. An independent scholar, Steph is interested in dance halls and ballrooms, Black history, and infrastructure/engineering.
