Position: Maintenance & Grounds Technician

Status: Full time, permanent

Location: Newark Earthworks and Flint Ridge Nature Preserve

Salary: $19/hour

Summary:

The Maintenance & Grounds Technician is responsible for maintaining the aesthetic and functional quality of indoor and outdoor spaces. This role involves performing a variety of tasks to ensure that buildings and grounds are well-kept, safe, and visually appealing. The technician will work on building care and maintenance, custodial, landscaping, lawn care, and general maintenance duties, ensuring that all indoor and outdoor areas are clean and properly maintained.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform general building care and custodial duties
  • Perform general groundskeeping and landscape duties including mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding, and maintaining lawns and flowerbeds
  • Plant, fertilize, prune and apply herbicides and insecticides to lawns, shrubs, and trees; maintain and repair hardscaping and outdoor structures.
  • Monitor and suggest ways to improve practices in grounds maintenance and landscaping for better environmental stewardship and financial consideration.
  • With supervisor, coordinate work with external vendors, i.e., winter maintenance, mulch, tree trimming/removal
  • Clean and repair tools; service and repair equipment including tractors, mowers, automotive stock, etc.
  • Install and remove attachments on equipment as needed to perform tasks
  • Clean and repair site facilities, including buildings
  • Remove debris, snow, and ice from walkways, parking lots, and other designated areas; remove garbage from receptacles
  • Maintain parking lots, roads, and sidewalks on property
  • Follow all safety rules and protocols for operating equipment
  • Assist with the setup and teardown of indoor and outdoor events onsite
  • Assist with the maintenance, cleaning, and sanitization of restrooms and other site facilities as assigned/needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma PLUS one to three years relevant working experience OR Post-secondary degree or technical certification from an accredited institution in a relevant field

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Comfortable communicating with staff and the public.
  • Ability to learn and use various office software suites to perform essential functions of position
  • Knowledge of proper operation and safety procedures for equipment necessary to perform essential functions such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and other commercial landscape and maintenance equipment
  • Understanding of safe handling and usage of materials necessary to perform essential functions of position including commercial-grade cleaning and sanitizing solutions, herbicides, and pesticides
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License preferred
