About Strawbery Banke Museum:

Strawbery Banke Museum is a living history museum located in the heart of historic Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and culture of the Puddle Dock neighborhood, the museum showcases a diverse collection of restored buildings, exhibits, and landscapes spanning more than four centuries. As one of the oldest and best-preserved neighborhoods in the United States, we are frequently lauded as one of the most important open air history museums in the country. As we continue to grow and evolve, we are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our team as the Vice President of Preservation, Facilities, and Landscape.

Job Summary:

A new position, the Vice President of Preservation, Facilities, and Landscape will play a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the historic and cultural assets of the Museum. Reporting to the President and CEO, Thomas W. Haas Endowed Chair, the Vice President will lead three distinctive departments containing approximately one-quarter of the Museum’s year-round staff members.

Key responsibilities of this position:

  • building preservation including strategy development 
  • facilities management including security needs 
  • landscape planning and development 
  • collaborating on environmental sustainability projects 
  • short and long term planning for future projects
  • budget management

Strawbery Banke is seeking a candidate who values inclusion and collaboration and is ready to work cohesively with multiple stakeholders. 

Benefits:

Strawbery Banke values work-life balance and this position will be provided with 240 hours of paid time off per fiscal year. This position is also eligible for health and dental insurance plans paid 80% by the Museum, Life, Long-Term Disability, and Short-Term Disability insurances paid 100% by the Museum, a flexible spending account for medical related expenses, and participation in the organization’s 403(b) retirement plan with up to a 3% match. This position may also opt-in to the employee-paid vision plan. 

Salary: $90,000-105,000 per year plus benefits

Job Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a master’s degree in historic preservation, museum studies, architecture, landscape architecture, or a related field. The candidate must have experience in preservation, facilities management, and landscape planning, preferably in a museum or historic site context. 

In addition, Strawbery Banke is looking for strong leadership and strategic planning skills with the ability to balance short-term needs with long-term goals. Candidates should also possess excellent project management and budgeting skills, knowledge of preservation standards, regulations, and best practices, as well as effective communication and collaboration skills.

Finally, as part of a small but mighty museum staff, the ideal candidate won’t hesitate to jump in where needed to assist with events or projects. Some weekend and evening work will be required.
