ABSTRACT

An experimental format that allows a wide audience to experience virtually places and landscapes from a variety of traditional and local perspectives.

DESCRIPTION

I propose creating an experimental format that allows a wide audience to experience virtually places and landscapes from a variety of traditional and local perspectives.  I will organize several volunteers from across the state to present a story from their own experiences, or a story that has been passed down to them that touches the places that are culturally important within their communities. I envision having 4 – 5 speakers record a short, extemporaneous talk in the location their story takes place in.

Great idea, especially in light possible COVID-related travel issues. I like how these stories won’t be filtered, that people will have the opportunity to tell their own stories.

I agree, there are some real advantages with doing this virtually, since it has always seemed to me that it would be difficult to get community collaborators/stakeholders to a far-away conference. I’m assuming this will mainly be Utah places? It definitely could work well being Utah focused, since in addition to serving as a local community viewpoints session, it could also potentially do double-duty as a virtual field trip (or sorts) to places in the state. I’m excited to see how this develops!

  3. Hi, Elizabeth! I agree with the other commenters that this is a great concept. My follow-up question is about how you will choose the participants to ensure a diverse set of voices. In your position with the Utah SHPO, I imagine you have tons of connections and perhaps the options seem endless. A really appealing Community Viewpoints will draw from wide perspectives.
