ABSTRACT

Overlooked in the history of challenges to the United States military is the African American experience while desegregating its bases. Segregation was the official policy of the United States military from the Civil War through 1948. For military officers and politicians, there was no contradiction between fighting for freedom and maintaining segregation in their units. Despite that segregation, African Americas served heroically, and in the fog of war, racial lines blurred for everyone.   It was essential to cover experiences on the frontlines, but it leaves out the more dynamic interactions on domestic bases.

I want to present this research and possibly find other presenters.

I see that you have not received any comments yet. I’m wondering whether your framing is too narrow. Perhaps you could widen the focus to address segregation or discrimination in the military more broadly, to allow other presenters to discuss other wars or other types of segregation and discrimination. Certainly, these issues are relevant today with continued debate over female sexual harassment and trans identify in the military.

Or perhaps there are other folks looking to present on revisions of memory, which is part of where it seems this work might fit in? in other words, perhaps instead of finding co-presenters by geography or military topics, maybe some other folks who are working with filling in gaps of experience and understanding would like to join you?

I agree with the previous comments about that topic being too narrow. I would like to hear examples of how segregation and discrimination impacted individuals on domestic bases during the Korean War. Is there a certain individual or small group that would focus on?
