ABSTRACT

Documenting and exhibiting examples of queer history has been a challenging issue for museums and digital exhibition. With the start of pride month, and the grand opening of the Missouri Historical Society’s “Gateway to Pride” exhibit, the feeling of creating ways of brings individuals of the LGBTQIA+ community closer to their history has become even more prevalent.

Digital exhibition spaces have increasingly become popular ways of bringing the museum to communities. In a recent project, in which we combined Omeka, digitized materials, and QR codes, we are able to take the queer artifacts on the go and make it accessible. Taking these portable signs to pride events has invoked strong community memory among participants.

DESCRIPTION

I am looking to see if other public historians or museum members have implemented similar projects, and find other panelist . This doesn’t necessarily have to be focused on the LGBTQIA+ community, but other community partners. The main purpose of this project was to bring community members closer to their history and either introduce them to new memories or remind them.

People who have used digital exhibit platforms in conjunction with museums or education may find this project interesting and a new way of interacting with community members.
