ABSTRACT

A museum blog can be a valuable source of information for sharing public history in a public space, but deciding what topics to cover can often be challenging. In 2023, the communications team at the Chicago History Museum audited its blog posts to develop a new strategy for writing posts that were engaging and helpful to an online audience. Paired with a website re-design and a new system of categories, the museum blog has become a tool for telling stories and reaching (and reaching out to) communities that have been historically underrepresented, and a way to build solidarity among museum staff. Panel to include ideas for building up your own institution’s blog and share templates for soliciting blog submission ideas from the public.

DESCRIPTION

For this traditional panel, we hope to find two other panelists with topics and/or recent case studies having to do with the challenges of online public outreach, whether that be social media, video content, or other digital forms of engagement in the public history space.

Any additional feedback or suggestions for focusing the proposal are also welcome.
