ABSTRACT

Ideally, historic preservation of a property should involve all relevant stakeholders, including government professionals, consultants, local residents, amateur historians, and the people who created the historic significance of the property.  Unfortunately, this is not always the case, with the various stakeholders often finding themselves excluded from the preservation process or just being ignorant of what preservation activities have been proposed.  This roundtable will explore the possibilities offered by a historic preservation blog, which can unite all stakeholders and even propose new preservation projects that government or the local populace may be unaware of.  A Cold War historic preservation blog will be offered as an example.

DESCRIPTION

The organizer has embarked on a project to develop a Cold War historic preservation blog which is designed to unite all of the stakeholders for a particular preservation project — government CRM professionals, State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs), consultants who do much of the actual preservation documentation work, public and amateur historians, local residents, and the military veterans who effectively created the history that justifies the project.  Unfortunately, many times the various stakeholders exist in silos — the consultant (who might be an archaeological firm) and the government CRM professionals, both of whom may not be fully aware of the military history of the property; military veterans living thousands of miles away do not know that their former installation is being considered for some degree of preservation, and therefore have no opportunity to provide input; local residents are mostly ignorant of what significant military activities took place in their neighborhood; the SHPO is totally unaware of the degree of historic significance, and takes the government conclusions at face value.

The organizer seeks individuals who may have started similar blogs in different subject areas, or are thinking of doing so, who would be willing to participate in a Roundtable session at the annual meeting (Traditional Panel is also possible).  He also welcomes feedback on the embryonic Cold War historic preservation blog, or on blogs in general, and solicits offers of assistance with his particular blog.
