Project Details

This digital story map is a timeline of the ratification process for the 19th Amendment. The United States Congress passed the 19th Amendment, or "Susan B. Anthony Amendment" on June 4, 1919 and sent it to the states for ratification. At the time, women needed 36 states to ratify the 19th Amendment for it to be signed into law. Between June 1919 and August 1920 states argued, ratified, and rejected the 19th Amendment which was ultimately made official on August 26, 1920. The last ratification did not occur until 1984. Each entry includes information about the state's suffrage movement and ratification or rejection of the 19th Amendment.
