This Story Map uses maps, photographs, and newspapers and a narrative to explore the contexts and history of the 1898 massacre and coup in Wilmington, North Carolina. This digital asset was designed as part of Cape Fear Museum’s ongoing efforts to explore African American experiences in the Lower Cape Fear.

Project took an estimated 400 hours of work. The GIS specialist created a project-specific map; he also trained the historian on how to use the story map software. Research, writing, and editing took approximately 6 weeks of work, spread out over a longer period of time. This project would have taken longer if the historian had started from scratch, but this is one of a number of efforts to interpret this particular part of the county's history for the public.
