From Around the Field this week: The National Park Service is asking for public comments on the future of Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, Preserving Black Churches opened its grant applications for protecting Black worship sites, the Creative Commons is hosting a webinar on Indigenous collections stewardship, and the Metropolitan Museum Journal is accepting submissions for its 62nd volume.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Nominations for the 2027 Dan David Prize are now open until October 13, 2026. The Dan David Prize is the world’s largest history prize, annually awarding 9 prizes of $300,000 each to scholars in the historical disciplines
- The National Park Service is inviting public input on four early concepts and future of the reconstructed fort at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site. Comments are being accepted through October 23, 2026
- The Oral History Association is seeking a host institution or executive director for a five-year commitment beginning on January 1, 2028. Letters of interest should include a preliminary explanation of factors that would make you an appropriate executive director or your institution an appropriate home. Letters are due November 1, 2026
AWARDS AND FUNDING
- The LGBTQ+ Heritage Alliance is supporting projects that interpret historic places with LGBTQ+ significance. Applications for its 2026 National Grant Program are due by August 31, 2026
- Preserving Black Churches’ annual grant cycle has opened for projects that aim to preserve historically Black houses of worship. Applications are due by September 11, 2026
- The National Endowment for the Humanities opened applications for its Collaborative Research funding opportunity for projects that focus on the history and culture of the United States or Western civilization. Applications are due by September 16, 2026
- The Albert Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest at Villanova University is now accepting proposals to support public-facing history projects that speak to power, equity, sustainability, and justice. Applications are due by September 25, 2026
- The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) invites applications for the final competition of the ACLS Digital Justice Grants Program to support digital projects across the humanities and social sciences that engage marginalized histories. The deadline for applications is November 3, 2026

- The American Historical Association will hold the Virginia Conference on Introductory History Courses, which will be in person from August 28-29 at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond, Virginia
- The International Federation for Public History will host its 8th international conference on public history, “The Public History of Difficult Pasts,” in Lisbon, Portugal, from September 7-11, 2026
- The Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation is hosting its biennial National Asian & Pacific Islander American Historic Preservation Forum in Denver & Aurora, Colorado, US, from September 10-13, 2026
- NCPH and AASLH are hosting their joint conference, “The Work of Revolution,” in Providence, Rhode Island, US, from September 16-19, 2026
- The National Trust for Historic Preservation is hosting the National Preservation Summit in Washington, DC, from September 22-24, 2026
- The Council of State Archivists is hosting its annual meeting, “Preserve, Adapt, Endure: Building Resilient and Territorial Archives,” in Columbia, South Carolina, US, from September 23-25, 2026

- Creative Commons is hosting a webinar with the authors of Guidance for Indigenous Collections and Indigenous Data on September 1, 2026. It will explore how cultural institutions can apply practical, community-centered approaches to Indigenous collections while balancing openness with respect
- The Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute (SBWI) has opened applications for its new Architectural Carpentry & Preservation program, which will begin on August 30, 2027. The one-year program will provide intensive, hands-on training for students interested in preserving, restoring, and recreating historic buildings
- The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is hosting a live webinar “What is STEPS and Can It Help My Site?” on September 9, 2026. It will guide participants on how to implement STEPS in their history institutions
- Carleton University is hosting a free four-part lecture series at Library and Archives Canada this fall. The 2026 series highlights scholars and practitioners whose work addresses gaps in historical scholarship and archival collections. All lectures are free and open to the public
- The Organization of American Historians is hosting a virtual discussion of Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home on September 24, 2026, as part of its K-12 Teachers’ Book Club
PUBLICATIONS
- The Extractive Midwest calls for proposals that consider how the Midwest developed through extractive processes for an edited collection. Abstracts are due by August 30, 2026
- The Metropolitan Museum Journal is requesting submissions for its 62nd volume. The deadline is September 15, 2026
- The University of Nevada Press has published National Parks and the Supreme Court: Groundbreaking Legal Battles by NCPH member Carla Chung Mattix, which examines how the Court has shaped the National Park System
- The American Historical Association (AHA) is seeking an editor or co-editors for its journal, the American Historical Review. Those interested are encouraged to apply by October 1, 2026
- The Public Historian (TPH) has a special virtual issue available to all and will remain available for the rest of 2026. The issue, “Considering the Revolution,” edited by MJ Rymsza-Pawlowska, collects five essays written over five years, each based on five plenary conversations produced in partnership with the National Park Service and held at NCPH’s virtual and in-person conferences between 2021-2025
- Transpositiones, an interdisciplinary biannual peer-reviewed humanities journal, is seeking submissions for its sixth volume, which will focus on the environmental humanities. Proposals are due October 20, 2026
