From Around the Field this week: The National Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for America’s Most Endangered Historic Places; Preserving Black Churches’ annual grant cycle opens up; Culture& is hosting a five-part webinar series “Reimagining Museums” to discuss current issues facing museums; and NCPH member Scot MacFarlane’s The River That Made Texas will be published by the end of the month

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The National Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for the 2027 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 11:59 pm EST
  • Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) has announced recipients of the inaugural Placekeepers Fund. The fund awarded a total of $500,000 to fourteen sites across the United States and Pacific Island territories
  • Nominations for the 2027 Dan David Prize are now open until October 13, 2026. The Dan David Prize is the world’s largest history prize, annually awarding 9 prizes of $300,000 each to scholars in the historical disciplines
  • The National Park Service is inviting public input on four early concepts and future of the reconstructed fort at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site. Comments are being accepted through October 23, 2026
  • The Oral History Association is seeking a host institution or executive director for a five-year commitment beginning on January 1, 2028. Letters of interest should include a preliminary explanation of factors that would make you an appropriate executive director or your institution an appropriate home. Letters are due November 1, 2026 

AWARDS AND FUNDING

  • Preserving Black Churches’ annual grant cycle has opened for projects that aim to preserve historically Black houses of worship. Applications are due by September 11, 2026
  • The National Endowment for the Humanities opened applications for its Collaborative Research funding opportunity for projects that focus on the history and culture of the United States or Western civilization. Applications are due by September 16, 2026
  • The Albert Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest at Villanova University is now accepting proposals to support public-facing history projects that speak to power, equity, sustainability, and justice. Applications are due by September 25, 2026
  • The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) invites applications for the final competition of the ACLS Digital Justice Grants Program to support digital projects across the humanities and social sciences that engage marginalized histories. The deadline for applications is November 3, 2026

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

  • Connecting to Collections Care is hosting a free webinar on Caring for Born-Digital Collections on September 14, 2026. The session will focus on how small to mid-sized cultural institutions can manage their digital collections
  • Culture& is hosting a five-part webinar series “Reimagining Museums” beginning on September 17, 2026. Each session will provide thoughtful debate and deliberation on the current issues facing museums today from displaying human remains to accepting corporate sponsorship
  • Carleton University is hosting a free four-part lecture series at Library and Archives Canada this fall, starting September 17. The 2026 series highlights scholars and practitioners whose work addresses gaps in historical scholarship and archival collections. All lectures are free and open to the public
  • The California Association of Museums is hosting an online session on building an inclusive museum budget on September 17, 2026. Participants will learn how to use their budgets to support an anti-racist workplace culture
  • The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is hosting a History Hour workshop on September 29, 2026. It will help museums and other non-profits create governance structures by implementing bylaws and legal compliance
  • The Organization of American Historians is hosting a virtual discussion of Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home on September 24, 2026, as part of its K-12 Teachers’ Book Club   

PUBLICATIONS

  • The University of North Carolina Press will publish The River That Made Texas: A Forgotten History of the Trinity by NCPH member Scot McFarlane on September 29, 2026. View the official book trailer and visit the website to learn more
  • The Metropolitan Museum Journal is requesting submissions for its 62nd volume. The deadline is September 15, 2026
  • The University of Nevada Press has published National Parks and the Supreme Court: Groundbreaking Legal Battles by NCPH member Carla Chung Mattix, which examines how the Court has shaped the National Park System
  • The American Historical Association (AHA) is seeking an editor or co-editors for its journal, the American Historical Review. Those interested are encouraged to apply by October 1, 2026
  • Transpositiones, an interdisciplinary biannual peer-reviewed humanities journal, is seeking submissions for its 6th volume, which will focus on the environmental humanities. Proposals are due October 20, 2026
