For many years NCPH has allowed potential presenters to submit early topic proposals for feedback before the final submission date. This year, we received 42 topic proposals. For the last several years, NCPH has worked with the National Park Service and a team of researchers (Caitlin DeAngelis, Carla D. Martin, Rayshauna C. Gray, Aabid Allibhai, and Eshe Sherley) on a Special History Study (SHS) of Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters Historic Site examining the lives of the early Black residents of the site. Increased deployment of National Guard units, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) forces are impacting public history sites—including museums, universities, and cultural organizations—across the country. Following military escalations in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, the arrival of a large border patrol presence in Chicago coincides with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and may also affect public sites in midwestern states sharing the Lake Michigan border.
