Abstract

The NCPH Digital Media Group is organizing the Digital Humanities Lab – a workshop that provides opportunities for collaborative learning and professional networking around digital resources, skills, and strategies for public historians and professionals working in adjacent fields (e.g. librarianship). The workshop will consist of a combination of pre-planned breakout sessions and sessions on topics generated by participants on the day of the workshop. Digital Humanities Lab is an informal, inclusive, participatory experience. All levels of tech-savviness (or lack thereof) are welcome.

Description

Formerly known as THATCamp NCPH, the Digital Humanities Lab is a workshop that brings together experienced and novice digital humanists, public historians, librarians, archivists, students, and anyone interested in applying digital technologies to public humanities work. The workshop offers a variety of breakout sessions (some pre-planned and some developed on-the-spot on the day of the workshop) that provide opportunities for participants to teach, learn, experiment, trouble-shoot, discuss, and create. This workshop is highly collaborative and participant-driven. We are seeking:

  • Volunteers to facilitate pre-planned breakout sessions on specific digital tools, topics, or theories related to digital humanities
  • General ideas for tools or topics to be included in the workshop (either in a pre-planned breakout session, or an on-the-spot session developed at the workshop)*NOTE: It is highly desirable that break-out sessions include practical applications of content/tools/theories

We are seeking all interested participants, and are especially interested in increasing participation by graduate students and professionals in adjacent fields (e.g. library science).

So glad to see this new iteration of THATCamp NCPH! One person you might reach out to is Jack Dougherty at Trinity College, a digital humanities rock star who’s based in Hartford. He’s been involved in at least one previous NCPH digital camp and may have useful ideas about planning for 2019. The other thing I’m thinking is that it would be great to link this with the conference theme, since there’s a natural connection there that doesn’t usually happen with our themes. Maybe there could be a track specifically on using digital tools for repair work, or a link with one or more of the workshops? Rebecca Perry’s proposal here on 3D printing is definitely headed in that direction, and it might be worth touching base with her to see if there’s some possibility of collaborating.

Thanks, Cathy! I will follow the leads you suggested.

  2. Jim Boorn says:

Suggest that there be a broke out session on the use of digital technology as the relate to providing access to persons and professionals with disabilities such as use of 3D printers for the visually impaired.

Thanks for your suggestion, Jim. Do you have expertise in this area, or do you know someone who does?
