Wow, Serra as the first LA real estate developer! In general, I think it will be important to include the voices of California Indians in your story, especially as canonization ramps up. Are the new statues mostly just of Serra, or do they also include the little boy to be saved?
The two I reference are the only ones I’m aware of with the Indian boy. There are some outspoken Native Californians, mainly artists and academics, but their voices circulate in mostly very different discourse than the formal public history channels of journals, peer-review books, etc., and the conversations are decidedly asymmetrical.
