From around the field this week:The National Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting applications for multiple grants; the Virginia Association of Museums is offering a workshop about disaster preparedness; Museum Advocacy Day will be February 24-25; and the Association of African American Museums is seeking proposals for their 2020 meeting.

AWARDS and FUNDING

  • The American Association for State and Local History is offering four scholarships for individuals to attend one of their 2020 onsite workshops. Two scholarships will be awarded to new professionals and two for applicants broadening the racial and ethnic diversity of the field (applications due January 15, 2020)
  • The National Trust for Historic Preservation will be awarding grants to advance ongoing preservation activities for historic places representing African American cultural heritage through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund (applications due January 15, 2020)
  • The National Trust for Historic Preservation will be accepting applications to receive grant funding for preservation and educational projects (applications due January 15, 2020)
  • The American Alliance of Museums’ Education Committee (EdCom) has four national awards to recognize outstanding museum ed work across the field (applications due January 31, 2020)
  • Nominations are open for the 2020 National Preservation Awards (nominations due February 3, 2020)
  • The American Association for State and Local History is accepting nominations for their Leadership in History Awards (nominations due February 1 and March 1, 2020)

  • Chevalier’s Books is hosting independent historian and heritage conservation consultant Alison Rose Jefferson for a book talk to explore Living the California Dream, African American Leisure Sites during the Jim Crow Era on January 16, 2020 in Los Angeles, CA, US
  • The Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums is offering a free day-long workshop, “Cornerstone Learning: Museum Security,” on January 28, 2020 in Washington, DC, US
  • The Virginia Association of Museums is offering a workshop, “Prepare for the Unexpected and Keep Operating During a Disaster,” on April 6, 2020 in Williamsburg, Virginia, US.

PUBLICATIONS

  • The Museum Scholar (TMS) has put out a Call for Papers for the third volume of Theory and Practice: The Emerging Museum Professionals Journal: “Museum Futures: Museums as Change Agents,” an exploration of how museums operate as sites of change (deadline for submissions January 20, 2020)
