ABSTRACT

In the twenty-first century, curation, exhibition, and historic preservation has been part of an evolution. Since the 2020 social reckoning, historical and cultural institutions across the country pivoted in using ways to tell different stories about the injustices against African Americans. I want to emphasize that Black culture is American culture by creating atypical spaces to highlight African Americans’ contributions to the cultural landscape of the United States. This presentation will explain my personal journey which led me to that purpose in my work to amplify the stories of African Americans and informing the audience non-traditional avenues to reimagine the African American experience.

DESCRIPTION

My goals for the proposal is simple:
1. To make sure that this proposal fits the theme of the conference.
2. If it fits within the confines of the conference, then I was thinking about presenting it “Pecha Kucha” style. Would it be the right choice for presenting this to the audience?
3. I see that the proposal format are primarily a “group effort?” Is there room for me to present as an individual?
4. If there isn’t room for a session, is there an opportunity for me to present in the space reserved for the “unconference?”
5. (I wanted to included the brief specifics of that journey, but there wasn’t enough space to include in the abstract.)
6. I am soliciting feedback for elaborating/focusing the proposal.

I admit that I had to google “pecha kucha” but now that I have, I think it sounds awesome. It seems almost like a performance, though it could work (I think) as part of a panel. If it is important for you to present as an individual, I wonder if this might be something the program committee would consider doing in another space –the way some conferences hold space for “lightening talks,” or as an alternative format in the poster session. Not sure these comments are helpful, but I guess I’m saying that NCPH is always open to new formats and ideas; sometimes we take a minute to figure out how to integrate them into our conference. Thank you for pushing us in new directions.

This proposal is *everything.* I think the format you’ve selected is particularly fitting for the way you’d like to share information, but it would be a little awkward to do as a panel. However, this is an excellent way to get us thinking about how we expect people to present information and their lived experiences to themselves and to the public. As for elaborating on your proposal, you an actual use the format you’ve chosen to do just that – you’ve mentioned non-traditional avenues to reimagine the African American experience. I’d like to know more, and those avenues/methods can serve as the broad categories of your presentation.

I agree that this proposal would be a good candidate for the unconference or a “lightning” talk–both of which seem well-suited to a solo presentation like yours, which would explore public history through the lens of your own experience. Pechu Kucha certainly could work, but I’m curious why *you* chose that format.

I have seen pecha kucha done at conferences before and did not know that was the official name! I love this idea, and I agree with both Denise and Patrice about the panel–this would make an interesting panel presentation if there are others who would do the same, but it could be a little awkward as a traditional panel as well. So i guess, I see the “panel” as a cypher and am VERY much for that happening! I actually just want to see this happen even if it’s just you, so if there is some way that we can make this happen—-yes. Please and thank you.
