DESCRIPTION

The Committee of Environmental Sustainability (NCPH) and its counterpart with AASLH are interested in gathering a round table of organizations, local to Rhode Island or the region, to explore the impact of sea rise of historic resources and older neighborhoods, and more critically, what some resilience strategies might be. It is the 10th anniversary of the Keeping History Above Water conference, begun in Newport. We plan to invite the Newport Restoration Foundation where KHAW lives. We have not approached the following, but plan to:  the Providence Preservation Society, as well as looking at local grassroots groups like the People’s Port Authority- perhaps University of Rhode Island and the Aquidneck Island Land Trust (AILT). In addition to these and serval other suggestions from KHAW, we welcome suggestions from any others interested or doing similar work in the region.

The goals for this session are to explore the different groups working together, or perhaps not working together yet, to address the cultural as well as the natural impact of sea rise.

We are posting early in order to solicit and explore what questions and issues public historians do or might want to address regarding climate change, flooding, and the coast.  What is being done? What groups are involved?  Is there cooperation and communication between natural and cultural organizations?
