Abstract
In the Asia-Pacific region, where 80% of the disasters are climatological, meteorological, or hydrological, women are disproportionately affected, suffering from the impact of floods, droughts, and the effects of climate change. With increased global attention to climate change, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have designed programs and developed “best practices” specifically to encourage Asian women’s political participation and increase their status at the local socioeconomic levels. The purpose of my paper is to examine various ways women’s participation in programs focusing on climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster relief reduction (DRR) challenge traditional roles and influence their ability to diversify their livelihoods.
Seeking
I would like to form a panel that would include those who examine women’s roles as agents of change in the public sphere; as well as those with expertise in the historical context of climate change. My proposed panel also would be enriched by contributions of policy makers who understand the role(s) of NGOs in historic preservation, especially in Asia but also globally. I would be delighted to provide an extended abstract of my proposal and absolutely welcome ideas on how to elaborate and focus the panel to include other related presentations. Thank you for considering this topic.
