Abstract
The goals of this panel are to bring awareness to the NCPH community about Public History performance models for making accessible the historical facts, interpretations, artifacts, archives, and cross-discipline connections that are not always available to the quotidian public; and to hopefully foster the seeds for a new community of interest focused on the practice of, and advocacy for, creating Public History performance models. The new group could also be a way for connecting people who as an individual or in collaboration, would like to craft, or contribute to, a Public History performance model on a specific topic. As an initial starting off point, the panel exchanges would be framed by the 2017 conference focus: What is the benefit of a Public History performance model to The Middle? What needs does it meet? Can a public history performance model include members of the Middle as program contributors and performers? What would be the benefit? What makes a stage, a stage and is a traditional one needed? Should models in general aim to serve adults in communities rather than children in schools? or both? How can public history practitioners ‘put history to work’ through a performance model? What is the value of adding what types of specialized components to the common ubiquitous narrative/performance/slides model? It may be entertaining, but should you start with that goal, or not worry? As one of the panel participants, I would be introducing one example ( with video clips ) for what can be learned from it: the Public Musicology performance model I co-developed as form of Public History engagement, along with how audiences have responded to them . I’m hoping this posting surfaces others who have models and experiences to share. Clips illustrating the model would be very welcome. I would like to end the panel with these questions for follow up: If a NCPH interest group were to form around this topic, what should it look like and how might it best work?
Seeking
Looking to hear from anyone thinking about, or interested in a panel on, types of performance models for bringing Public History to general audiences: what’s their value/ why do they matter? Are they especially needed now? What does a performance model offer the public history practitioner? Can the same model serve both general and expert audiences? If you’re working with a performance model, thinking about doing it, would like to but don’t know where to begin, or just curious to know more, let me know! Let me know too if you would you like to be on the panel and/or help me put it together. Your responses will shape the final proposal.
