Abstract

Shared authority sounds great, but how do you actually curate exhibits with a shared or even distributed authority model? This workshop is targeted to those who help manage student-curated and comm unity-curated exhibit projects. Experts in exhibit development who have experience in collaborative exhibits will present examples of time-tested processes, tools, and tips for successful exhibits. Attendees will have the opportunity to apply the models to case studies and will build their skills in exhibit project management.

Seeking

The idea for this workshop is based on experiences and conversations with others involved in student-curated projects, particularly the Guantanamo Public Memory Project and the Humanities Action La b’s State of Incarceration project, as well as numerous course-based exhibit projects. While public history content is well within faculty and curator areas of expertise, developing exhibits with students and other non-specialists presents particular challenges. It also often requires knowledge of exhibit development and design that are rarely part of the core training for public historians. We were interested in what could be learned from t hose with expertise in exhibit development and with experience in community -curation. We have reached out to two exhibit developers with this experience (Tamara Biggs and Charity Counts), who are interested in sharing their knowledge. We are interested in knowing from potential audiences for the workshop, what needs to you have? What models have you found that are helpful? Who else might be a good workshop facilitator to bring into the conversation?
